March 29, 2010Reading is Fundamental, a federally funded program with a local match required, helps Children's Friend provide 5,700 books to low-income children on an annual basis. We understand the need for investing in children early and believe this to be an important initiative for the children and families that we serve.
The ability to provide books to the children and families we serve has resulted in an increased focus on literacy for both children and parents, with both children and parents excited about reading.
The primary focus of Children's Friend is reaching at-risk children early to give them the best possible start in life. Reading is Fundamental is one piece of our work that helps to enhance the resources we provide to young children and their families. We are concerned that the future federal funding for the Reading is Fundamental program is in jeopardy.
