April 2, 2012Over the past few weeks I was able to join many other child advocates across our State in testifying before the House and Senate Finance Committees on the DCYF budget.
Because of the past and continued lack of investment in preventative services in Rhode Island we do not achieve the best possible outcomes for kids and we often run over budget in child welfare spending. Even today, with our child welfare system undergoing fundamental redesign for the children and families who are open to DCYF, the State has again cut funding for prevention. The only way to get great outcomes for kids with an affordable level of investment of resources is to support families and safely prevent as many kids as possible from ever becoming involved with DCYF.
