April 9, 2012The CDC recently estimated that 1 in 88 children are identified as having an autism spectrum disorder. We believe that early diagnosis and early intervention is the key to a child’s success. As a result of this core belief, our Early Intervention team started working to find innovative ways to address emerging data about autism spectrum disorders. Nearly four months ago, we began to lay the groundwork for an “Autism Team” here at the agency, named SUCCEED. This inter-disciplinary team will support both families and staff through the diagnostic process and provide therapies that will build upon a child’s strengths; in the specific areas of play, social, communication, and sensory needs. The team will educate parents on their child’s diagnosis and provide information to help them better understand their child’s behavior and needs. SUCCEED will use evidence-based practices and integrate home, group and parent trainings components. The goal is to build a strong collaborative approach among all providers involved and parents. Through the development of innovative programs and collaboration with other public and private agencies, Children’s Friend provides the type of comprehensive services that meet the needs of today’s families.
