More Than 1,000 Participants Turn Out For Ninth Annual PROVIDENCE, RI – May 7, 2011– Cheers, laughter and smiles filled the Carousel Village at Roger Williams Park today, where Children’s Friend held its ninth annual Walk & Run. The event was sponsored by Panera Bread, and all proceeds will benefit Children’s Friend’s services and programs. “We are thankful to all who came out today to support Children’s Friend in our efforts to provide important services to Rhode Island’s most vulnerable children,” said David Caprio, President and Chief Executive Officer of Children’s Friend. “Private fundraising is more important than ever during times of fiscal uncertainty.” "Our theme is 'Helping Families in Knead', as one of our cultural values is to give back to our communities,” said Bahjat Shariff, Senior Vice President of Operations and Operating Partner, Howley Bread Group, a Panera Bread franchise. “This event means a lot to us; and our cafes really get behind it. Not just with monetary donations, but by bringing together our associates and customers to attend the Walk as well.” In addition to the 3.2 mile walk, there was a mini golf course, yoga for children and a timed 5k run. Congressman David Cicilline and Providence Mayor Angel Taveras helped to kick off the festivities with the children’s race around the carousel. “It’s a pleasure to be here today to enjoy an afternoon of fun activities and to support Children’s Friend, an organization that does so much to serve our community’s children in need,” said Mayor Taveras. Frank Carpano, NBC 10’s sports anchor hosted the opening ceremonies; Cat Country 98.1 FM’s Cat Country Music Van provided entertainment throughout the day; and Mr. Deep Positivity and Adonis Da Don stopped by for live performances.
