Head Start Kids Visit City Hall - June 6, 2011

Today, a number of our Head Start students made their way to Providence City Hall, a visit arranged by members of the City Council and supported by Mayor Angel Taveras.   This was an incredibly special event for our children as they truly did take Head Start to City Hall, just like Mayor Taveras has done. Many of you are aware that the newly elected Mayor of Providence, the Honorable Angel Taveras, was a Head Start graduate…he often talked about his experience of Head Start to Harvard while he campaigned.   Mayor Taveras’ journey is an inspiration to the children and families we serve as well as our dedicated staff.

Now, the Mayor, along with members of the City Council, allowed our kids to visit the very regal Providence City Hall.  This awe-inspiring event certainly has left a profound impression on our kids as they met Mayor Taveras and members of the City Council, visited the Aldermen’s Chambers and roamed the halls of the this beautiful, majestic building.   This experience surely has made a difference to the children we serve.

The entire building watched as the Mayor welcomed our kids into his office, gave them a private tour of his chambers and answered their many questions…including what his favorite color is!  Then, in return for his generous hospitality, the children’s voices filled the second floor landing as they sang two of their favorite songs to the Mayor and his staff!

Council President Michael Solomon continued the tour and topped the afternoon off by reading to our kids and providing them with a healthy snack!   We could not have asked for a better afternoon.   Many, many thanks to all of the fine folks who made this event so special for our children.
