Our Dexter Center in Central Falls received a very special guest this morning, Congressman David Cicilline, who visited our staff and classrooms in celebration of Head Start’s 50th Anniversary. Head Start has been the premier model for providing the whole child an opportunity for success in school and in life since the summer of 1965 and more than 31 million children have benefitted from Head Start’s comprehensive services – both in the home and in the classroom.
Head Start graduates have become business women and men, professors, teachers, lawyers, mayors, Members of Congress, athletes, foundation Presidents, Grammy-winning musicians, poets, and parents. Providence’s Mayor Jorge Elorza is a Head Start graduate as is our former Mayor of Providence, Angel Tavares. You can read all about our former Mayor’s experiences in Head Start and how they shaped his future in an opinion here in today’s Providence Journal:http://www.providencejournal.com/article/20150518/OPINION/150519419/2011#2011/?Start=1&_suid=143196297064503022404358393339.
We thank Congressman Cicilline for supporting our mission and representing our children and families in Washington, D.C. The children truly enjoyed their visit from the Congressman and had a wonderful time playing with him and showing off the skills they have learned throughout the year.
