Be Your Healthiest Self! For the past 7 months, on Wednesdays at noon at our Dexter site and on Fridays at noon at our Friendship site, there has been a large group of employees learning to make lifestyle changes to become their healthiest selves.
The Children’s Friend Employee Health and Wellness committee in partnership with the Rhode Island Department of Health, Diabetes Prevention Program has been facilitating a free, 16 week evidence-based healthy lifestyle change program for employees who registered and qualified by being at-risk for type 2 diabetes.
In the Healthy Lifestyle Change program, employees are learning important lessons to help prevent chronic conditions by reducing risk of developing type 2 diabetes and of having a heart attack or stroke. The goals of the program are to: lose 5-7% of body weight; exercise at least 150 minutes per week; and eat healthier by adding more fruits and vegetables to the diet. Participants are learning how to be fat and calorie detectives, to move their muscles, manage stress and stay motivated!
Success! Through the lessons taught by the facilitator and the support of co-workers, thirty of Children’s Friend employees completed the initial 16 week program and collectively lost 231 pounds! This equals at least a 5% body weight loss for each employee.
The research behind this evidence-based program shows that people who are at risk and take part in a structured lifestyle change program where they lose 5-7% of body weight and achieve 150 minutes of exercise per week, can cut their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58%.
Children’s Friend is committed to helping people learn to build healthier lives and small life changes can make a big difference in overall health. Because of the success employees have experienced during the first programs offered, there will be two new Healthy Lifestyle Change programs starting for employees in mid-September. Two additional programs will also be offered for parent participation.
Congratulations to all who have participated and who are on their journey to become their healthiest self.
