Children’s Friend Opens Doors to New Center in Providence for Families

Dignitaries Officially Welcome Families to Head Start in Providence’s Hartford Neighborhood

United States Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Congressman James R. Langevin, Congressman David N. Cicilline, Governor Gina M. Raimondo, Mayor Jorge O. Elorza, and Councilman John J. Igliozzi gathered in Providence today to cut the ribbon on Children’s Friend’s new center in the Hartford neighborhood of the capital city.

The new center, located at 550 Hartford Avenue, is situated conveniently within a popular neighborhood shopping center on the RIPTA bus line. The center will offer Head Start services, and represents the return of sequestration dollars to the organization’s Federal Head Start program, as well as childcare, family counseling, family visiting, and comprehensive WIC services to the community. In total, 1,000 families from the community are anticipated to be served by this new center.

“Quality family services and early childhood education are worthwhile investments for our children,” said Whitehouse. “I’m grateful for the work Children’s Friend is doing to give Rhode Island kids an opportunity to succeed in school and beyond, and I congratulate everyone who worked to make this new facility possible,” said United States Senator Sheldon Whitehouse.

“Children’s Friend supports and strengthens Rhode Island families, changing the lives of so many at-risk young people,” said Congressman Jim Langevin. “During a recent visit, as staff and volunteers sorted through a room filled to the brim with Christmas presents for children in need, I was humbled. The visit reminded me of the importance of support agencies like Children’s Friend, which is exactly why I have long fought against sequestration and in support of improved funding. They have done so much for our community, and I am grateful that they are expanding their presence in Providence.”

“Children’s Friend provides essential support services for children all across Rhode Island and I am thrilled that they are increasing that access with a new Hartford Avenue location” said Cicilline, who has been a strong advocate for early childhood education since his time as a state legislator.
“Ensuring that children have access to education and development services from an early age is a crucial part of supporting the health and success of our next generation, and I am proud to support Children’s Friend as they advance that goal right here in our state.”

“As the mother of two young children, I know how important it is for children to spend their days with trusted educators. Children’s Friend offers a range of services beyond just education, including social services,” Governor Gina M. Raimondo said. “This organization helps entire families and as a result helps our state become stronger.”

“I am a Head Start kid,” added Mayor Jorge Elorza, pointing to the impact and importance of the Head Start program in his own life.

“This is an investment in the families in this neighborhood,” said President and CEO David Caprio. “Our presence will offer essential resources to families and ensure that their children start school on equal footing with their peers across the state. We are grateful to Senator Reed, Senator Whitehouse, and Congressmen Langevin and Cicilline, along with their colleagues in Washington, for ensuring federal funding for these important programs.”
