Too often the start of the summer means an end to essential services many low-income families rely on throughout the school year. For children in need, summer days can include long hours cooped up in hot apartments, with little food, and limited access to safe outdoor play spaces.
Five year old Sarah* needed a stable environment. While she was attending our Head Start program, she was removed from her home due to safety concerns, and was placed in foster care. A summer scholarship gave Sarah the consistency of a classroom environment where she could continue to learn and grow. Her family worker also helped to ensure that both Sarah’s birth parents and foster parents were getting what they needed to provide the best care to Sarah. With this support, Sarah continued to thrive and successfully transitioned to kindergarten in the fall.
Research conducted by the National Summer Learning Association clearly demonstrates that children from low-income backgrounds experience summer learning loss at a rate greater than their peers in middle and upper socio-economic statuses. Children who attend preschool in the year prior to kindergarten may very likely experience the “summer slide” if they don’t have access to consistent high quality learning opportunities the summer before entering kindergarten.
Children’s Friend has the only Summer Learning & Enrichment program in Rhode Island designed to promote school readiness and mitigate summer learning loss for the most vulnerable preschoolers by providing a safe and stimulating educational program that runs for eight weeks, five days a week, for 6.5 hours per day.
Our program is effective – children who attend continue to show improvements in eight developmental domains: language, literacy, math, science, creative art, social-emotional, approaches to learning, and physical development. By providing an educational safety net, children are more academically prepared for the new school year. As a result, children have a more positive school experience, allowing them to be much more enthusiastic learners and ready for success.
Your investment provides access to an engaging education program, healthy meals, daily safe outdoor play, field trips, and highly qualified teachers all summer long. Children with the highest need are given priority, especially those in vulnerable situations like Sarah. Without you, these children would not have this opportunity.
* $1,320 will fund a child for the entire summer
