The Best Investment

Those of us at Children’s Friend, along with many other advocates, have often stated that investments in high-quality early childhood programs are some of the best investments that the government can make. We have pointed to studies which show economic returns and better outcomes for the children who participated in high-quality early childhood programs.

New research just out from Professor and Nobel Laureate Economist James Heckman documents that not only do the original participants in the high-quality programs experience significant gains in outcomes, but that their children experience positive outcomes in education, health, employment, and civic life. These positive second-generation outcomes show that high-quality early childhood programs, like those offered here at Children’s Friend, can be a means to break the cycle of poverty.
